Alienation of the oldies

Many of our parents and grandparents were ostracized or sidelined when dialect was banned from SBC, from radio or TV broadcast. Their world just closed down on them and they would have to go around finding people who could talk to them in dialects. The grandchildren would be distant aliens as they too did not speak dialects but English and Mandarin. The Malays, Indians and Eurasians faced smaller problems than the Chinese. With the stroke of a pen, a whole generation of oldies became foreigners in their own country and in their homes.

It was a ruthless policy that was not phased in over a period of time. It just cut into their lives overnight. They were not prepared for the change, they were not integrated into the community but simply ex communicado, as simple as that. Who cared how they would cope or able to cope with the change? Were they provided with any alternative sources of information and entertainments over the air?

Soon we are going to see another batch of oldies going ex communicado. The Mediacorp is terminating the teletext services. No more information on TV for stocks, for airport arrival and departure schedules and no more what not that the oldies have become dependent on. The oldies are old dogs that managed to learn the trick of operating the remote controller to view the teletext. This could be the last trick they are capable to learn without straining the grey matter as many are computer illiterate or have not access to a computer.

The rationale for the withdrawal of the teletext services is that the advancement of technology has made such information available in many places and from service providers. The teletext is obsolete and need not provide such a service anymore. Those who need to read the teletext should be able to get their information from other sources. This is the biggest assumption which may not be valid.

Many of the oldiest could not handle the computer or smartphones or ipad. So, how are they going to get their information? Are they obsolete too and their interests no longer important? I bet many of the oldies and aunties are punting the stock market and are relying heavily on the teletext for stock quotes. Sure, they can always call their brokers for quotes. Telephone calls are free right? Wrong?

The brokers should be happy to hear their phone ringing when these oldies have to start calling them again. Only slight problem, many would feel pai seh calling their brokers every now and then without making any trades. With the teletext they could flip to their hearts’ content without disturbing anyone.

Now, would these old dogs want and can learn any trick, like operating the computers? If not, another piece of their world will be cut off from them. Who cares.

RB

If it does not affect at least 60% support for the PAP, it is less important to what is more important to PAP.

Not just oldies but also Sinkies in general, tio bo?

I think organisations must remember they have a basic duty to be a good corporate citizen. Not just P&L.........

As a good corporate citizen, it is your duty to take care of the seniors who built this country.....

I personal know a few old uncles and aunties who greatly depend on teletexts for information.......

Please don't take teletexts away from these seniors......not now....may be five to ten years from now .....

Can the Govt help in this.......

Anonymous said...

Tio lah. Or else how come not that old Sinkie PMETs can also lose their jobs to younger foreign talents so that PAP can increase the GDP?

Anonymous said...

Ya lor.

What is losing teletext as compared to losing one's job to younger foreign talents?

Or losing 2 years of your time to serve NS?

So doesn't matter lah.

So far I think all Tio lor

Of course Govt can.
An Opposition govt definitely can.
They are people and Singaporean friendly.

Can a PAP govt help?
You tell me lah!
"3 meals in a hawker centre, a food court or a restaurant?"
This type of people can help Singaporeans or not?

Why do we do this type of thing to our seniors.....

It is very cruel to take the teletexts from them......

I am very sure our PM respects our seniors.....

Let the seniors age gracefully, watch gracefully .......

don't forget, we will grow old too .......

Was it a PAP Minister or was it an Opposition politician that suggested sending our parents to nursing homes in Johor might be a good idea?

Those seniors who still need teletext are a minority lah. Majority are internet savvy and some are even bloggers, like Redbean.

And as time passed, a diminishing minority until extinct. So what's the issue taking away teletexts from them?

So a WP Govt can help? What makes you think so?

Anonymous said...

If WP, or any other opposition party, can contest 100% of seats in GE 2016, then I believe they can help.

Or else forget about it lah.

Be smart and help yourself, to make more money, including money to buy kopi kau.

anon 10.09am

but why take away from the senior minority .........

please lah, you will grow too* (*if you are lucky).........

60% Sinkies will never vote for any party that cannot contest 100% of seats in an election.

So if a party can contest 100% seats, for sure they are ready to be govt, no need for them to say one.

And if the party contest less than 50% of the seats, for sure they are not ready to be govt, no need for them to say also.

If I were Lee Hsien Loong, that's why I don't worry one.

And now you Sinkies know why ministers must paid millions, more foreigners to come and higher GDP?

people will say, we must move on, must embrace new technology, must embrace change, etc. so easy for them to say. only when you old than you know. many young people very good with new technology but the real knowledge is still with the old folks who have gone through experience. young people can do things fast but inside still empty lah, lack of real knowledge, lack of change. i remember in the early 1990s when an old colleague was forced to confront the computer, she cried in front of the screen. but she was very good in her work. it took a long time for her to confront her fears and learn. i agree with one of the readers, scrap teletext maybe 5, 10 years down the road. i still having a lot anxiety learning to trade online, so many things to remember.

This is definitely not one of your better posts.

Anyone, whether young or old who relies on a stone age info portal like Teletext should never ever get themselves involved trading or even investing in shares. It's just too old tech.

I am a 70 year old oldie myself. Technology is easy to learn and get used to provided you have the interests to learn.

Frankly, I am at a loss to understand how anyone can be afraid of computers, tablets, smartphones and the like.

These gizmos have changed my life. It has empowered me to an extent undreamt of decades ago. It has changed my life.

So quit whining about oldies being sidelined in the face of technology. Quit pining for dinosaurs which died aeons ago.

Hehe.

WB 10.46AM......

GOOD MORNING SIR!

You are 10 yrs my senior. It is nice to note that you are internet savvy. I m also internet savvy. More and more seniors are becoming more internet savvy.

Unfortunately, for some reasons, there are still a large group of seniors not internet users yet. Many still get info from teletexts.

The point here is why take teletexts away from them now. Five yrs from now may be just right.

Hi WB, got to call you big brother here. There are many oldies or not so old oldies who are not computer literate. And I too have came across professionals who were afraid of the computers.

For those who are playing with the computers, it is a whole new world at their finger tips. But there is still a big group that needs teletext. The computer is not accessible to them as it is not a cheap piece of equipment to own. The tv is just there for them to click on and off.

Some and quite a lot are unable to adopt to technology esp those seniors that have little education, in the 60s and above.

It was once said that the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly;
and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.

Realistically speaking, Chinese educated elderlies will have much difficulty handling smartphone and computer as invariably there is the
need to be well versed in 'pinyin'.
And 'pinyin' is no easy task for most elderlies as well as those not familiar with Mandarin. So, we have to understand their handicaps rather than blame them for not learning to keep up with technologies.
Anyway, most elderlies are reaping what they sow, most in the older generations not only had voted PAP, they had also mostly supported PAP's doing away with all the vernaulars as a national policy.

No choice, have to learn to adapt and change when necessary. Just like anyone who migrated, have to learn new language, culture, skill etc. Like it or not, the world will evolve without those people who are unwilling to change.

But then, when have Singaporeans, particularly the oldies, been of importance to be considered in any policy thought up by the PAP?

A wayang here and a wayang there, a lollipop here and a lollipop there, is all that is necessary to quell the unease that arises every now and then. They said 90% of Singaporeans do not pay tax, but GST is an even worse tax than income tax for the poor. Singaporeans pay $70 for every $1K spent, which works out to about $840 annually. When GST goes up to 10% soon, the burden is going to get worse. And GST is paid by everyone from the womb to the grave and thereafter too.

No teletext will not affect me .My concern is only those dialect speaking Ah Lau or auntie, who tell me that they need their children or someone to book a taxi for them to hospital or elsewhere.
They call the number and hardly understand the recording...what number to press after they got the line through...
We now seems to neglect the elders who help to contribute in the past.

I do not agreed with WB as i've just attented a course arranged by the c.c. to get people over 50 to know and to use computers, the room was full of wires, small and we were cramp, the people that attended range from 72 year olds to 50 year olds, the week long course had the uncles more confuse than understanding to use, some could not even converse well let alone talk in engish but they were all there trying to learn.
The problem is not that they did not try as being in that classroom itself took courage, the problem is that sone had never had the chance to even touch a pc, the general perception of everyone can learn is unfair to them, these dinosaurs did their very best but WB should count his blessing as not everyone in that room can write as goid as him.
The pace was too quick even when it was suppose to be a basic class, the aunties and uncles were there to learn but without exposure almost half the class failed.
I too could have said things like they had no interest and then laugh at them but unless you are with them you will not understand what problems they face and how they felt, one was even older than you Mr. WB, please do not pass judgement on them, all of us learn at a different pace.
