Solutions to a hazy problem

We are getting a little reprieve from the full onslaught of the haze problem for the moment. Last week was frightening and if the haze did not subside yesterday, we are in for big trouble when our logistics and great contingency plans failed to react fast enough. A simple thing like 9m masks could not find their way to the people who needed them. They are probably kept in the deep silos or high security bank vaults and no one has the key to open it.

The economic cost of the haze can come into hundreds of millions, or as one analyst guessed, could even hit a billion dollars. And that is not counting the damage to the health of the people, the ecological system and the cost of medicare. And the numbers did not include the cost to our neighbours in the north. The cost to the people in Riau is their own problem and for them to take care of.

Can there be a long term solution to the haze problem? The plantation owners, big and small, are going to clear land as economic growth and making money are the end alls of life. So they will continue to burn, like an annual religious ritual. There is an almost simple and effective solution to this problem, that is to allow them to do as they pleased as it makes economic sense to the companies to do so. For the cost of a match, they could bring down thousands of hectares of vegetation. Why pay for the bull dozers and the manpower to do the hard and expensive way? The hundreds of millions or billions of losses to Singapore and Malaysia are not their concern.

It only takes the Indonesian Govt to decree that burning can only take place in the month of October after the North East monsoon has started. The haze will go to the Indian Ocean instead. How the Riau people going to live with it by being in the centre of the haze is still a problem but not ours to care.

Another way is to pay for the solution. With the damage done to Singapore and the Malaysian economies in the hundreds of millions or billions, it would be pragmatic and economically expedient to pay the companies what they need to clear the land. This could be only a few millions dollars. Why not, it makes economic sense isn’t it? It is a win win solution. The plantation owners got their land cleared and we have clear skies, and the cost is only a fraction of the damage that the plantation owners would have inflicted on us in Singapore and Malaysia.

Yes, it is like paying a ransom to the thugs to leave us alone while they feast on the loot. Isn’t this the thinking of the day, that as long as it makes economic sense, just do it. We gambled by bringing in millions of foreigners just to increase our economic numbers with not a care about the dire consequences now and into the future. We allowed our banking and finance industry to indulge in all kinds of unacceptable high risk ventures for short term profits, employing the crooks from New York, London and Mumbai to run our financial institutions to the ground. Some may not think so as it is still looking like a rosy apple from the outside while the worms are growing within.

The cost of the solution to pay the plantation owners for clean air is nothing. It only costs a few million bucks which is small change really. The pay of a top banker is enough to foot the bill with change to spare.

What do you think? Oops, I know, talk is free and talking nonsense is a good weekend escapee.

You sure are right about the screw up in mask distribution. Says a lot. They are more interested to show ministers overseeing the distribution than actually getting them to the public. No logic also to switch focus to 24 hr psi against the normal 3 hr. it is just numerical average over a larger sample space. No bearing on current status to make effective decision. This crisis has exposed and exposed the severe deterioration in our administration.

There is another solution.

Instead of buying up almost bankrupt banks and international banks run almost solely by one race, Temasek Holdings might consider buying up all the palm oil concessions in Central Sumatra that is giving us so much headache and causing so much sleepless nights for Vivian. Look at that guy, he lacks sleep. What is the big deal about letting some small plantation owners laugh all the way to the bank and some Indon, Malaysian and Singapore companies showing a healthy balance sheet after selling to Temasek? Clean air is priceless. If we can't do much about the burning, we can buy those damn concessions and make sure there is no burning. With a probable rebound in commodity prices in the near future because the world has so many mouths to feed, Temasek might even make a tidy profit from the purchases.

Like RB, a few nonsensical suggestions and crazy talk on a Sunday is a small antidote for the still foul atmosphere that I am seeing outside my window.

Cannot.
This is against our political ideology of bullying the poor and helpless to benefit the rich & powerful.

PAP is acronym for Poor Always Pay.

Analyst said this, economist said that, experts said this. Why are they saying the obvious that everyone can see? Of course it affects businesses, restaurants and there will be economic costs.

Funny thing is there are also people having better business, such as doctors, mask makers, energy suppliers aka Singapore Power, coffee shops and anyone selling cold drinks etc.

And above all, it mitigates the dengue problam I think.

I hope not all the fires are started on purpose. In hot dry weather, even a piece of broken glass on the ground under the hot sun can start a fire.

Nature is such that when things are not needed, natural ways of getting rid of them comes into play. No need human intervention.

WB's (11.18am) idea is the best i've heard so far in a week. it puts the control in our hands. then we can burn the land during the months when the wind is blowing in the other direction.

Surprise to see those in their 60s calling for protest at HLP and kpkb over some smoke. Agung is never wrong to call Sinkies childish.
What to do?Sinkies never seen attap house or grass on fire before.

Think positive and having haze once a while is good.It tells one how vulnerable one is.
Sinkies need to be reminded that not everyday is a Sunday.

It gives a warning to those concern on what to do and what contingency plan to have because the next time it may not be so lucky. It remind those spending their time offering ice cream to wake up and to have contingency plan instead.

Solution.Start with the basic of getting quotation for 20 million mask and stock them on standby.
When needed, dun panic.Get the CD and soldier to despatch the mask to all community centres and distribute it to the citizen.
Learn a lesson here.Dun distribute only after the haze is gone.

Uncle, you Teochew use to say,Wan Cheng Poot Loo Koon Leng.
Its your neighbour who can offer you help faster than others in case of needs.
Method of approach should not be the usual way like you use to boss your children around.Dun kancheong when those children keep crying.Be cool.Aichai..

Protest and kpkb dun help.Building up a good rapport with your neighbours help.
You dun need a million dollar to know that.

I think it is a bit late for any type of "peaceful" solution.

Why?

Because this shit has been going on for decades already, and allowed to continue unabated.

It's just like the PAP's argument for ridiculous top-tier government salaries -- it started 30 years ago, no one actually DID (i.e. ACTION!) anything, just the usual bitchin' and moanin', empty threats to throw out the PAP...all talk and bluster, ZERO action.

SAY HELLO TO LUNG CANCER

Now the yearly haze caused by the burn-offs of corrupt land owners who bank their loot in Singapore banks, and run their businesses from Singapore-registered corporations -- is accepted as "norm" -- even though people are gasping for that sweet, scarce OXYGEN and wheezing from the potentially CARCINOGENIC particulate matter accumulating in their respiratory systems, with every breath they take.

If there are scientists and statisticians out there, they might want to accumulate data. I AM WILLING TO BET that there is an INCREASE in lung cancer, and other cancers associated with the respiratory tract amongst NON SMOKERS in the coming years.

Fact: although the burning of plant matter creates all sorts of toxic substances to be released, few people are aware of the radioactive pollutants like radon. Many plants absorb radon which is released when the plant is burned. If you breath in a particulate containing radon, and it lodges in your tissue -- i.e. refuses to be expelled by your "out" breath -- then your risk of developing a TUMOR increases significantly.

OK, so correlation doesn't necessarily mean CAUSATION, so we might not be definitely sure that the spike in cancer incidence is caused by or exacerbated by Indonesia's massive annual international poison gas spree, but data is data, and it will always be there for future generations of mathematicians and scientists to examine.

P.S. Just to clarify and not scare people unnecessarily:

Radon is NOT absorbed by the human body. It is present in the atmosphere, you breath it in, and it is expelled when you breath out.

The danger is when radon is ATTACHES ITSELF to the microscopic particles (aka particulate matter) which has the potential to REMAIN IN YOUR LUNGS even after you exhale. Why? Particulates are heavier than air, and the lungs and respiratory tract is warm, moist and sticky.

OK, please return to your lives of blissful ignorance and self-delusion. Being ignorant and happy has its advantages :-)

The solution to hazy problem and lousy government and daft people is to migrate. No country is perfect but there are many places better than sinkaland if one bothers to find out and explore. I just came back from Holland - Bruce Sprinsteen concert and things (food, housing, cars) are much cheaper there than here.

i thought matilah all for free enterprise and business, all the ann ryan shit. now anti big business. getting older.

Ⓜatilah $ingapura⚠️ said...

Sure, I am for free enterprise and most of but not all of that Ayn Rand shit.

However enterprise is not "free" if there is massive government collusion -- favouring "special groups" for favours whilst sacrificing others.

To use the current Indonesian example:

1. Those who are in the industries benefitting from the fires causing the haze are being protected by their govt so they can do as they please and make plenty of money (increase in value)

2. Those in other industries -- like tourism, air travel, general day to day commerce, all are FORCED to suffer, and have no choice but to bear a decreased quality of life (drop in value) and also bear the financial burden of REAL economic losses.

I am, by default anti big business, because the big businesses -- especially banks are protected by government which they use to squeeze out competition and the smaller players.

I am, by default supportive of the little guy who against all odds dares to "go for it" to turn his dreams of enterprise into reality.

MS, don't twist and turn like a snake. On record you have been a supporter of big businesses and anti small guys. Your motto, you can't take advantage of a situation, you die. And many small guys died.

That's you MS.

@1111

>> On record you have been a supporter of big businesses and anti small guys.

??What?? You've obviously read me wrong, and have formed a completely wrong idea of me. Not that it matters -- couldn't give a shit about what some anon troll mother cunt-licker says on the internet... but I'd better clarify, for my own benefit.

I am a "small guy" myself -- I used to work in corporations, but that was over 20 years ago now. I've been on my own with the same 5 core-people I started out with 2 decades ago, without them, I'm finished. Why in hell would I be "anti-small guy" when most of my revenue comes from "small guy" clients, many who've been with me since I started.

>> And many small guys died.

Small guys always die lah. Every day -- in good times and bad. 80% of new businesses FAIL within 5 years. Of the remaining, another 80-90% will fail in the next 5 years. If you can make it for 10 years, you're chances of survival increase many fold. (statistically speaking).

BTW, I'm not "anti" big business. I'm against the practices some of them get up to by influencing politics and policy which benefits them at the expense of others. But, that is the reality of commerce -- if you are a "small guy" complaining about this won't benefit you. At the end of the day, there is no "level playing field". It is up to you to find out how to :

1. Make money
2. Stay legal
3. Stay alive to enjoy your benefits
