A Sino Japanese war inevitable

The Abe-Aso Administration, filled with a slate of ministers that are mainly militant in thinking, will continue to push for the remilitarization of Japan and would adopt a military approach in its relations with its neighbours. These are men and women that would want to relive the glory of their imperial past and a martial Japan, willing to go to war if necessary. The belligerent rhetoric and the aggressive diplomacy to drum up support against China, to cling on to its war loots, the islands of Diaoyu and Dokto and an intransigent policy will set Japan on a war path with China and the Koreans.

War between Japan and China is only a matter of when and how. China will not allow Japan to keep Diaoyu Islands and Japan is adamant not to return them to China. And Japan has been upping the ante, increasing air and sea interceptions of Chinese air and naval vassals, increasing military spending and attempting to forge a military alliance with Russia, Mongolia, India and Indonesia to prepare for a war with China. And there are the every ready USA, Vietnam and the Philippines, already converted and ready to take the Japanese side.

When could actually mean imminent, as any miscalculation or the recklessness of a naval or air personnel, could lead to a shoot out any moment. What is holding back the parties is the nature of this war. Could it be a limited conflict between Japan and China or would it lead to the involvement of the USA and its allies? A two party warfare has more chances of not escalating the war to a regional or world war, with both countries giving the other all they had, including aerial bombings of the other country and an invasion by ground troops. Still it is a testy situation as the outside parties are very tempted to get involved directly or indirectly.

An involvement of the Americans would mean that the conflict will be totally out of control and it will be a world war, a nuclear war even possible. Once the two nuclear powers locked horns, what is there to hold them back with both parties wanting to secure a victory? Defeat in a conventional war between the US and China is not acceptable to either party and it will simply escalate to a level beyond anyone’s imagination. All the allies of both sides will be in battle. The outcome is simply unthinkable.

Can a conflict between Japan and China be fought just between the two combatant countries? The balance of power will see Japan being decimated and overrun by China with much certainty. Such an end result is unacceptable to the Americans. Both China and the US know the outcome and would probably have made all the calculations and whatever needed to be done if they allow this war to go on in the first place.

To allow a war between China and Japan to flare up, both China and the USA must have come to an agreement, including the Russians, to accept the outcome without going one step further, a nuclear holocaust involving all the nuclear powers. Given such considerations, can a war really kick off between Japan and China? Are the Japanese that crazy to think they could walk away as victors?

What is in the minds of Abe and his hawkish ministers to want to start a war with China? Unless they believe that they could defeat China and suffer acceptable destruction and casualties. They cannot win a war with China without involving the Americans.

The remilitarization of Japan is a certainty guaranteed by the Americans. It was the Americans that imposed a pacifist constitution on Japan, making it illegal to do so. In all counts, Japan has rearmed and has a military force bigger than any countries in Asia except China and India and perhaps North Korea. And now the Americans are saying go ahead, they are going to keep mum about the pacifist constitution. And America will support Japan’s military adventure against China.

The war is coming soon.

No Sino Japanese war lah.

China now is not the China of the 1930s, you know.

Only stupid people and countries will really fight military wars.

Posturing for war, or play mind games, yes. But real war with weapons, no.

Anonymous said...

Countries get advanced weapons and build military capability not to go to war but to avoid war or to act as a deterrent against aggressors.

So that enemies calculated that it is not worth to fight a war.

It is nice to have a big physical war every now and then. It keeps the population down and spending up. Singapore will benefit by selling supplies to both parties.

What do you think is happening in the Middle East? Playing house or computer war games?

The Japanese appetite for blood have been strangled for more than 60 years. They are yearning to do it again. Look at their rhetoric, talking about defending Diaoyu/Senkaku by force, talking about increasing military expenditure and building more warships. For fun, to bluff who?

Look at how rapidly they scrambled their fighters to intercept Chinese aircraft and the coast guards so ready to arrest Chinese ships. They are eager for war. What they are doing could trigger a war intentionally or by accident any moment.

And why not when the Americans are egging them to go, fight, don't worry, be happy, the Americans are behind them.

Don't under estimate the Japanese propensity for war. They are a war like country and being restrained after the 2nd WW by the Americans.

The Americans are cutting them lose to go on a rampage once again to give reasons for the Americans to be in Asia.

Modern warfare is very destructive especially when it becomes an all out war. Between China and Japan, with both possessing quite formidable weaponry, the big cities will fall and millions will perish.

War is no longer an option to settle disputes between two equally armed big powers. Don't pray pray.

China can afford to give all those tiny islands that it owns to Taiwan. Or sell them to Taiwan like Japan bought them from a Japanese Citizen.
Once the Islands change ownership to Taiwan, there should be no quarrel between Japan and China.

Hi RB,

Going back in history, the First Sino-Japanese War was in 1894 and in the Chinese calendar is the year of the “wooden horse” --- “甲午年”。

As such, Chinese historian termed the war “甲午战争”。

Next year 2014 is a “tricky” year in the modern Sino-Japanese history because it is “甲午年”。

This occurs once in every 60 years in the Chinese Calendar.

“甲”is the equivalent of “A” in Chinese. “甲”also represents “wood” in Chinese astrology and alchemy.

“午”in Chinese means “noon”. In the Chinese astrological animal zodiac, it also represents the “horse”.

In Chinese astrology, the hidden elements in “午” are “丁”and “己”,

“丁”represents “female fire” and “己”represents “female earth”.

Qualitatively and quantitatively, in Chinese astrology “甲” represents wood in abundance.

Likewise, in Chinese astrology, qualitatively and quantitatively, “丁” which is the main hidden element in “午” represents fire in abundance.

When you mix these 2 elements, which are qualitatively and quantitatively in abundance in their own form, what is the result?

For those unfamiliar with the Chinese astrological calendar, each full cycle in the Chinese astrology takes more than 500 years or more than half a millennium.

Currently, we are in the “下元, 下八运” phase which runs until 2023. Next is “下九运” which runs until 2043 and after which we will be going into another 540 years new cycle!

This is the Chinese equivalent of a “new millennium”.

Sounds “scary” but this is an inescapable reality!

The last change over was in 1504, during the Ming Dynasty era.

China then ( the Ming Dynasty ) was under the menacing threat of the northern invaders.

Back to the future, from 2044, in the Chinese astrology calendar, we will be going into the first year of “上一运”。

For those who are young enough to be around by 2044, you are in a very unique situation because you would have crossed 2 “millenniums” in one life time --- one Western millennium in year “2000” and one upcoming Chinese millennium in year “2044”.

Now back to Sino-Japanese history.

Politically, the world has not seen a major conflict for the last 78 years.

Arguably, one of the reasons is “MAD” --- “Mutual Assured Destruction”.

The more than 10,000 nuclear warheads now in possession by mother earth's various nuclear powers are more than enough to wipe out the entire human race, just like the “meteorites” that rendered the dinosaur specie extinct about 65 million years ago.

In short, “BOP” --- “Balance of Powers” is a “dictum” for “peace”.

Historically, majority of wars were fought on “Imbalance of Power” --- “IOP”

In the current situation, with the American military base in Okinawa, Japan, the age-old “Balance of Powers” dictum holds true.

I would not bet on any major war between the Chinese and Japanese anytime soon.

As for the “sabre rattling” in Japan, it is probably more for their domestic audience as a form of distraction and likely for some domestic political and economic objectives.

Any “sabre rattling” on the Chinese side is probably also for their domestic audience as well as distraction from domestic issues.

Nonetheless, on the surface, the situation does look tense for the past years and likely to remain so in the foreseeable future.

Cheers:)

Happy “Blogging”,

*in the 1990s, many American research groups collected thousands of blood and DNA samples and specimens of mainland Chinese (including 5,000 DNA samples from twins) through numerous joint research projects carried out in China. These samples were then sent back to the United States for further research, and could be used in developing biological weapons targeting Chinese. These samples came from 22 provinces in China, all of which were hit by SARS in 2003. Only provinces like Yunnan, Guizhou, Hainan, Tibet, and Xinjiang were left out, and all these provinces suffered less severely during the SARS outbreak. The author suspects that Japan is also involved, as many Japanese factories in Guangdong in the 1990s made it compulsory for all workers to have blood tests in the factory annually, rather than asking workers to go to local hospitals for blood tests and a proper physical examination. *

Inasmuch I am hoping for a war between China and Japan, with a support cast of the Koreas, Philippines an of course the "guest star" -- Uncle Sam...I doubt it will happen.

From the business standpoint, there is too much Jap investment in China. This China-Japan thing is CULTURAL and POLITICAL, aided of course by the meddling of the USA's foreign policy wonks.

>> It was the Americans that imposed a pacifist constitution on Japan, making it illegal to do so.

Who in their right minds would ever believe such an article of constitution is REALISTIC in a changing world?

Japan lost the war. Therefore is is up to the conquerors to do as they please -- until they leave. Having a constitution IMPOSED on you by a foreign conquering force can be argues to be NULL and VOID.

Anyway, that article of constitution was put their more to appease nervous Asians who had been conquered and occupied by Japan. They didn't want another rise of a militarily brutal Imperial Japan.

One good thing: war cost money. A lot of money. Doesn't matter how "fancy" your hardware is or how "sexy" your fighting men and women are to begin with...it costs lots and lots of money to KEEP A WAR GOING.

Japan can't afford a war. China is reluctant to engage and blow all its hard-earned dough on war when their main intent is to develop their cuntree.

America OTOH has the world's reserve currency which they can print with abandon and rule the world financially and militarily...at least for the moment.

Although Sars travelled from Hong Kong to the Mainland and other parts of Asia and South East Asia, there was no report of Japanese or Whites gottened infected with it.

Like to say that if such biological weapon are used, me doubts that the other Races will be immuned infinitely as the viruses are found to mutate. It could be just a matter of time before the diseases attack all beings.

Anyway, such warfare goes to show that wars are not just the damages caused by military conflict and fighting men. War is an ongoing event that may not be apparent. Cyber Warfare is another form of onvisible war.

Hi RB,

Here is a small piece of history to share with the readers.

After the heavy and humiliating defeat of the Qing Qynasty Imperial military in the two Opium Wars ( 1839 – 1842 and 1856 – 1860 ), the Qing Court mooted the idea of building a modern Imperial Navy to safeguard its coastline and territory.

In 1867, the idea of BeiYang Fleet, led by Viceroy Li Hong Zhang, was officially accepted and decreed by the Qing Court and 20 boys were specially selected from throughout China ( Qing Dynasty ) and sent abroad for advanced Naval training and warcraft.

In the 1880s, the Bei Yang Fleet was fully operational and regarded by Western media as the 4th most powerful naval force in the world, just behind Great Britain, the US and the German Empire.

Alas, when military confrontation ensued after political incidents in the Korean Peninsula in the mid 1890s, the entire Bei Yang Fleet was sunk by the Japanese Imperial Navy in 1894 during the First Sino-Japanese War.

How did that happen?

Technically, the Western media was right that the Bei Yang Fleet was far superior than the Japanese Imperial Navy. But there was one big problem --- all the battleships were probably armed at less than 10% of its intended capacity.

Money meant for ammo purchase were either secretly funnelled to the construction of the Summer Palace as a 60th birthday gift to the then Empress Dowager or corruptly siphoned off to personal accounts. Even most of the existing mortal shells were emptied of their gunpowder and sold off for private profits.

When the war started, initially the Bei Yang Fleet held their own and even chased away the Japanese Imperial Navy warships. But as the war progressed, the Bei Yang Fleet real ammo were depleting fast and the Bei Yang Fleet crew ended up unknowingly firing “Blank Shells filled with cocoa powder instead of gunpowder” some of which accurately landed on the Japanese Imperial Navy warships but did not explode.

Subsequently, the Japanese commanders realising the Chinese warships had practically run out of real ammo ordered full assault on the Bei Yang Fleet warships, surrounded them one by one and sunk each and everyone of them. All the original twenty Western-trained naval commanders perished near the Yellow Sea.

It was one of the saddest chapters in modern Chinese history.

However, the humiliating defeat by a much smaller island state in the First Sino-Japanese War reverberated throughout the Qing Empire and awakened the hearts, minds and souls of the 400 million plus Chinese diaspora then under the rule of the Manchurians. It led Dr Sun Yat Sen to openly sever his Manchurian ponytail ( which was deemed a crime punishable by death at that time ) in the Imperial Capital and started the revolution which eventually toppled the Manchurian rule in China in 1911.

The present historical Sun Yat Sen Villa off Balestier Road was where he stayed whenever he visited Singapore during those period to escape the Qing Court's persecution and arrest as well as raise funds from Chinese immigrants in Singapore for his efforts to “return China to Chinese rule”.

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

The moral of this story is that the people must not be blind to official corruption and incompetent leaders. And they have to act fast and early or they will lose their country.

The daft Chinese were blindly controlled by the age old concept of mandate of heaven and rebel or revolt were something that they would only do when their homes were empty and their parents being raped in public. That was the case when Sun Yat Sen started his revolt. It was too late, when the Chinese people could have done that earlier as China was being robbed by the corrupt elite after the reign of Chien Lung. All the signs were there that the country was going down and they did not do anything.

It took more than 150 years to pay for their failure to act, and to redeem their pride and dignity as a people.

Can you imagine the Sick Man of Asia giving the Empire a run for their money? How could such a tag be hung on the neck of the Chinese for so long and not only the West want the world to believe so, the third world believed so after being bombarded by derogatory western media and literature for centuries, the Chinese also believed so until recently, that they were made of better stuff.

The Chinese should know their own history better than others. And IF THEY DO NOT WAKE UP TO THE FACT THAT THEIR NATION FELL ONLY FOR ONE REASON AND ONE REASON ONLY, then just too bad.
China was takened by others because the Chinese Elites never stop fighting among themselves for power and for wealth. History will repeat again soon, if the wealth gap is not check.
Hope that the elites in China will not betray their own nation again to satisfy their insatiable greed.

Hi all,

To have a more accurate “reading” of the potential upcoming scenario, perhaps we can gain some foresight from the following excerpts from Sun Tze's 3000 years “Art of War” regarding warfare:

“兵者,诡道也。故能而示之不能,用而示之不用,近而示之远,远而示之近。利而诱之,乱而取之,实而备之,强而避之,怒而挠之,卑而骄之,佚而劳之,亲而离之,攻其无备,出其不意。此兵家之胜,不可先传也。”

Given the Japanese “deep understanding” of the art of war and their past “Nazi-type blitzkrieg” element of surprise war tactics especially their war maneuvers in the First and Second Sino-Japanese Wars and the sudden attack on Pearl Harbour while in the middle of a peace talk with the then Franklin Roosevelt Administration, it is probable that they are just “playing along” with their former captor who “incidentally thwarted” their “world hegemony ambition” by “bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki” and brought about their World War II capitulation and the “almost eternal national dishonour in their own eyes”.

The Chinese has a saying, “醉翁之意不在酒”.

As anon @ May 10, 2013 2:34 pm mentioned rather aptly, //“ What do you think is happening in the Middle East? Playing house or computer war games? ….... “.//

Likely the US would like to “go about their business undisturbed” in the Middle East, therefore predictably they get their former “vanquished foe” to keep the Chinese preoccupied in the Far East.

Anyway, they can always finished their business in the Middle East first and just like World War II in Europe and Asia, let others “fight till their last breath” and “enter the ring in the 12th round of the boxing fight” to snatch the easiest of victories and be “recorded as the hero and victor in history”.

Edmund Lim said...

Remember, they landed on Normandy when more than 90% of the German troops and war machinery were already taken out by the Russians. Incidentally, some of the German troops awaiting them to defend the German soil were between 12 to 16 years old premature German boys in military fatigue equipped with whatever “available weapons” left in the German's almost empty war armoury. Others were above 60 years old frail wrinkled German grandfathers putting up a brave fight for honour and pride of a dignified people.

According to historical record, more than 20 million Russians perished in World War II fighting the Germans and the Russian winter in 1941/ 1942 also played significant role in the Nazi's ultimate defeat. From the initial 10 million or so German troops who marched eastwards in their search for more “breathing space”, the majority did out make it back.

The Japanese war records were even worst. More than 35 million Chinese sacrificed their lives to hold back the Japanese invaders in Mainland China. Otherwise, Japanese brutalities in other parts of Asia could have been worst if they were not bogged down by the Chinese continuous harassment, disruptions and ambush along the China Mainland coastal supply lines during 1937 to 1945.

During the early part of World War II, the US were chased out of many parts of Asia including the Philippines by the Japs as the “Japs were still not exhausted by the Chinese yet”.

When the US took on the Japs again in late 1943 till the surrender in 1945, the Japs economy was already in tatters from a prolonged war adventure and an over-stretched supply line and war machine mired in the vast countryside of China mainland.

Historically, when the US tried their hands “boxing their opponent right from round 1” like in Vietnam, their military record was not that “flattering”. However, this may not always be true. It depends on the circumstances of the war.

As Sun Tze said, “故形兵之极,至于无形。无形则深间不能窥,智者不能谋。因形而措胜于众,众不能知。人皆知我所以胜之形,而莫知吾所以制胜之形。故其战胜不复,而应形于无穷。”

Irish philosopher George Berkeley ( 1685 – 1783 ) who lived till the ripe old age of 98 said it best in his most famous adage, “esse est percipi” ( “to be is to be perceived”).

Philosophers called it “the veil of perception”. George Berkeley's contemporary German philosopher Immanuel Kant termed such a thinking his “Copernician revolution”.

In this ending, I would like to share the following Chinese quotes which hopefully can be read and understood by many people of this world. Understanding the wisdom in it may contribute to the peace and making mother earth a place to remember by and not forget on this very “Mother's Day”. :)

Happy Mother's Days to all the Mothers in Singapore and other parts of the World.
